In a Jar.

If I were my own best friend I would remind myself…

sometimes it is hard to know where you are from the inside…

especially if you are stuck in a jar

A jar of strawberry jam? maybe raspberry? ketchup? perhaps mustard? dijon?

where am I?

***A few weeks ago I received a post from a blog I follow (Gaping Void by Hugh Macleod) that stuck with me – it basically said “it’s hard to read the label on the outside of the jar when you are on the inside.” Here is the original post if you want to check it out:

Images related to this just kept popping into my head. What if I woke up one day in a jar of strawberry jam? Like one of those silent black-and-white mimes I would feel around the edges and realize I was in a jar and somehow I could breathe jam! Cool. I could see pink and red, it would be sweet and sticky, I would really hope I had some toast and butter. What about a jar of ketchup? Different shape, not as sweet, little tangy, probably a massive french-fry craving soon to follow. Which got me thinking about mustard… very yellow, might want a hotdog…

I could go on and on, but the point is, sometimes you cannot tell where you are when you are there. I know that doesn’t completely make sense. If you stop and look at where you are RIGHT NOW you know that you are sitting or standing or lying down. You can most likely see the physical surroundings, hear the ambient noise and have some sense of smells in the air. You know WHERE you are, but it can be hard to know where that is in relation to a bigger picture.

Are you in the beginning of something really great? Did you just meet the love of your life? Are you stuck in a dead-end a job? Do you find yourself in a bad relationship? It is hard to tell WHERE you are. I am not saying “being in the jar” is a bad thing or a good thing. I’m simply saying we often cannot tell what jar we are in until we get out of it or until someone we trust tells us “hey you’re in a jar.”

  1. Thanks for this, it made me think of my current situation. Hehe. :)) I like your drawings, wish I could also draw. 😀

    • Thanks! I hope you’re working your way through whatever jar your find yourself in. If I could find myself in a jar of marshmallow fluff today I might just stay there. 🙂
